In the last few decades, the incidence of such conditions as allergic asthma, allergic rhinoconjunctivitis, and atopic dermatitis, which were once considered rather rare, has risen in patients quite dramatically, affecting approximately 20% of the population. In particular, atopic dermatitis in children has risen from 3% in the 1960′s to a current estimate of 10-15%. Allergic rhinitis has been on the rise as well, accounting for about 20% of the population, whereas allergic asthma accounts for 10%. Therefore, GUNA categorizes allergies as “endemic”. Genetic predisposition to skin sensitivities, exposure, and sensitization are the three variables triggering allergic disease.
